Our Company Story

We were visiting Charleston, SC for the Fourth of July holiday, 2024. During the visit as we made our way around the surrounding beach communities, we noticed piles of oyster shells that were discarded at different locations. It was explained that oysters are a hallmark of the Charleston dining scene, and the shells were the byproduct of Charleston’s love of oysters. It was essentially at this moment that Ostrea & Co Styles was born. After the Charleston trip we began to research the oyster and seafood shell waste issue and discovered that it was widespread throughout the world. Why not use this resource that is readily available? We learned that when dumped in landfills, these shells become a menace to the surrounding waterways and environment.

Ostrea & Co Styles will donate a portion of our proceeds to support oyster reef restoration and eco-system health in coastal areas where the seafood economy is critical to the well-being of the people who live there. We believe in balancing purpose and commerce. We believe in the circular economy. We are all just ordinary people. We can make an extraordinary difference when each of us decides to be the difference.

Our company is transforming discarded oyster shells that otherwise are a menace to surrounding wildlife, waterways and the environment at large, into sunglasses. It’s just common sense. Let’s use the resources already around us rather than producing millions of tons of waste that becomes a new problem.

Ostrea & Co Styles was born knowing that eco-friendly and sustainability can only move forward when consumers lead in the right direction. That is your “call to action.” The burgeoning circular economy looks to use the resources already around us

Our partner has been honing their craft since the 1960’s, pioneering the path forward in sustainable materials. We have chosen our partners carefully to give you the choice we know you want.

Our company will set aside a portion of our revenue to be donated to a deserving non-profit that is working to make coastal waterways thrive. When eco systems thrive, people work and our communities and waterways benefit and thrive too. We are all in for that!

Meet the Founder and CEO

Barry Blundin

Hi, I’m Barry Blundin, founder and CEO of Ostrea & Co Styles.

I grew up with sand between my toes — from family crab feasts on the Chesapeake Bay to endless summers swimming in the Atlantic along the Jersey Shore. That feeling — the salt air, the sunsets, the connection to the water — has always been part of who I am.

A few years ago, while visiting Charleston, South Carolina, I saw massive piles of discarded oyster shells. What most people saw as waste, I saw as an opportunity. That moment sparked Ostrea & Co Styles.

Our mission is simple but powerful: turn environmental problems into beautiful solutions. We transform discarded oyster, mussel, and scallop shells — waste that harms coastal waterways — into premium, eco-friendly sunglasses. By combining these shells with plant-based materials and partnering with generational artisans in Italy, we create stylish, high-quality eyewear that tells a story.
